How-To
How High to Hang a Pendant Over a Dining Table
The short answerHang the bottom of the pendant 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop if your ceiling is 8 feet, and add about 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling. Choose a single pendant about half to two-thirds as wide as the table, and keep it at least 6 inches in from every edge.
A pendant over the dining table does two jobs at once. It lights the food and the faces around it, and it gives the room a centre. Hung too high, it floats away from the table and the light spreads thin. Hung too low, it cuts across the view between the people sitting opposite each other. The numbers below are the ones we use when customers ask us, and they work for almost every room.
How high to hang it
Measure from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade, not from the floor. Standard dining tables are about 30 inches tall, so on an 8-foot ceiling the bottom of the pendant sits roughly 60 to 66 inches off the floor.
| Ceiling height | Tabletop to bottom of pendant |
|---|---|
| 8 ft | 30 to 36 in |
| 9 ft | 33 to 39 in |
| 10 ft | 36 to 42 in |
| Double height | Keep it near 36 to 42 in, and choose a larger or taller fixture so it holds the space |
Within each range, go lower for an open or translucent shade you want to read as part of the table, and higher for a solid shade that throws its light straight down. Before anyone drills, have someone hold the fixture in place while you sit down: you should see the person across from you without leaning.
One pendant over a round or square table
A single pendant should be about half to two-thirds the width of the table. A 42-inch round table takes a shade of roughly 21 to 28 inches; a 60-inch table can carry 30 inches or more. Leave at least 6 inches, ideally 12, between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table so nobody stands up into it.

Tala
Bower Pendant, Large
$237.50
Hand-spun steel made in Yorkshire, about 24 inches across with a wide, low incline that spreads light evenly over a full table. Right-sized for a 42 to 48-inch round.

Gus* Modern
Milton Large Pendant
$620
A 20-inch shade in natural wood veneer, so the grain glows when it is lit. Made to hang alone over a dining table, it suits rounds of about 36 to 42 inches.

Aromas del Campo
Bigcoss Pendant
$969
Pepe Fornas's 31½-inch matte black disc hides two light sources: an LED ring that bounces off a mirror for ambient light and a spotlight aimed down at the table. Both are dimmable, for a large table that hosts often.
Two or three over a long table
For a rectangular table, divide its length into equal zones and hang one pendant over the centre of each. A 72-inch table takes two medium pendants; 84 inches and up usually takes three. Keep the outer pendants at least 12 inches in from the ends of the table and all of them at the same height. Shades of 12 to 16 inches are the sweet spot here.

Aromas del Campo
Betty Pendant
from $359
A wide, low glass disc, about 16 inches across, lit by an integrated LED plate. Clear glass gives a crisp glow; the smoked versions in amber, grey, blue or greenish brown give a warmer one. Dimmable.

Misewell
Lag Pendant
$540
Three translucent layers of unbleached organic cotton, 14 inches across, handmade in Milwaukee. A pair over a long table reads soft rather than bright, and it comes hardwired or as a plug-in.

Tala
Bower Pendant, Medium
$185
The classic coolie shape at about 14 inches, in hand-spun steel. Two or three in a row give a long table a steady, even light.
Over a kitchen island
The same 30 to 36 inches applies, measured from the countertop. Counters are about 36 inches high, so the bottom of each pendant lands near 66 to 72 inches off the floor. Islands usually take two or three smaller pendants, about 6 to 10 inches across, spaced 24 to 30 inches apart centre to centre.

Aromas del Campo
Bell Pendant
$420
A hand-painted ceramic bell, about 5½ inches across, capped with a marble ball. Hand-painted in Valencia; three in a row suit most islands.

Aromas del Campo
Chapéu Pendant
$319
Paloma Marín's wavy-brimmed ceramic dome, named for the Portuguese word for hat. Painted in any colour from the Aromas palette, with a brass, black or white mount.

Tala
Alumina Pendant
$115
A slim cylinder with a speckled braided cord and a small shadow gap at the neck. Pair it with a decorative E26 bulb for a clean line of light over the counter.

Aromas del Campo
Cloud Pendant
from $259
An opal glass shade inside a tinted glass dome, about 10 inches across, for a layered, atmospheric glow. Designed by Arnold Salido in 2025, with the bulb included.
Check the cable before you buy
Work out how much drop you need, then confirm the fixture's cable or rod is long enough. Take the ceiling height, subtract the height of the bottom of the pendant from the floor, then subtract the height of the fixture itself.
For example: a 9-foot ceiling is 108 inches. With the shade bottom 36 inches above a 30-inch table, it sits 66 inches off the floor. A 10-inch-tall fixture then needs 108 − 66 − 10 = 32 inches of cable, plus a little slack. Most of our Aromas del Campo pendants come with about 118 inches of cable, which your electrician shortens at installation, so tall ceilings are rarely a problem. The exact length is listed on every product page.
No ceiling box? Choose a plug-in pendant
If there is no junction box above the table, or you rent, a plug-in pendant hangs from a ceiling hook and runs its cable to a wall outlet. No electrician, and it moves with you.

Tala
Plug-In Pendant, Brass
$155
An extra-long cable, two wall and ceiling nodes to route it neatly, and an in-line dimmer. Add any of Tala's sculptural bulbs.

Tala
Oval II Plug-In Pendant, Brass
$285
The same plug-in system with Tala's larger Oval II bulb already paired, for a soft, diffused glow over a small table.
Get the light right
Put dining pendants on a dimmer: bright for homework and serving, low for dinner. Choose warm light, around 2700K, which flatters food and skin; many of the LED pendants we carry are dimmable, and each product page says which. If your pendants point light straight down, add a lamp or sconce elsewhere in the room so the table is not the only bright spot.
Questions we get asked
How high should a pendant hang over a kitchen island?
The bottom of the pendant should sit 30 to 36 inches above the countertop, which is about 66 to 72 inches from the floor on a standard 36-inch counter.
Does the height change with a high ceiling?
Add about 3 inches for each foot of ceiling above 8 feet, so 33 to 39 inches on a 9-foot ceiling and 36 to 42 inches on a 10-foot ceiling. In double-height rooms, keep the pendant near the table and choose a larger fixture rather than hanging it higher.
How many pendants go over a 6-foot dining table?
Two medium pendants of about 12 to 16 inches, each centred over half of the table and at least 12 inches in from the ends. A single long linear pendant also works.
How big should a pendant be for a round table?
About half to two-thirds of the table's diameter. A 42-inch round table suits a shade of 21 to 28 inches.
Can I hang a pendant without an electrician?
Yes, with a plug-in pendant. It hangs from a ceiling hook and plugs into a wall outlet, so there is no wiring to change.
